What to Do If You are in a Car Accident?

The first step is to assess yourself and your passengers for immediate injuries. Call 911 if anyone requires immediate medical attention. If your vehicle is drivable or safe to move, you should move your vehicle safely to the side of the roadway or other secure location with the other vehicle. Once to safety, you should contact the police to report the accident. It is also important you speak with the driver of the other vehicle and exchange information, including, name, address, phone number, automobile insurance carrier, automobile insurance policy number. It is also recommended that you take pictures of the other persons driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance card. You should also take pictures of both your vehicle and the other vehicle to document the damages to each vehicle. If there are any witnesses to the accident, also take down their information (name, address, phone number).

If you feel pain to any part of your body, you must seek immediate medical attention either at a hospital or urgent care. If your primary care doctor can see you immediately that is also an option. Tell the medical provider every part of your body where you feel pain even if it is just minimal pain as that minimal pain may become worse in the days to come.

The next step is to contact an attorney who specializes in personal injury for a consultation. We recommend that you not speak with any insurance company before speaking to an attorney. We also recommend that you not fill out any paperwork without speaking to an attorney first.

The attorneys at The Licatesi Law Group, LLP specialize in personal injury and have attorneys ready to answer all of your questions and make sure that all of the proper documents are filed, including the documents to begin payment for any accident related medical expenses or missed time from work. Our attorneys are available to meet in person at our offices in Uniondale, at the hospital, your home or even virtually.
